Since 2016, AHA! has focused on training therapists in the progressive trauma therapy known as EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). Originally developed by Francine Shapiro, EMDR utilizes bilateral stimulation to help process unsettling experiences, memories, and/or beliefs, and is particularly effective in treating post-traumatic stress. Intensive training of therapists/therapist associates has been delivered by Laurel Parnell Institute trainers; including AHA!’s co-founders, Dr. Jennifer Freed and Rendy Freedman, MFT, who have been practicing EMDR for over 20 years. Dr. Freed and Ms. Freedman are certified as consultants by EMDRIA (EMDR International Association) and lead a weekly consulting group for local therapists learning to integrate this transformational practice. In the wake of the Thomas Fire and Montecito mudslide, AHA! mobilized eight highly qualified therapists and four interns to offer up to six free treatment sessions for anyone directly impacted by the devastation. AHA! has led grief circles for the community-at-large and offered healing circles at specific schools in response to tragedy.
